Images of War is a surreal indictment of warfare set in WW1 plus a concluding companion story from the second great clash of arms. There are scenes attended by a chorus of soldiers, and episodes are occasionally illumined by original poetry. The work is a short novella comprised of sequentially unrelated chapters touching on the sheer inhumanity, horror and monumental waste entailed by mechanised warfare, particularly apparent now in the current deliberate use of military hardware against civilians.
Julian Simpole trained in art and design, with Shakespeare's The Tempest being his special project. He has garnered immense experience teaching in the English state school system where he was often co-opted into the English and History departments. Julian is passionate about chess, having reached master strength at his best and, of course, history, having published a film script about the later Western Roman Empire: Kings of the World. He has also written film scripts about the Falklands War and the Soviet-Afghanistan conflict, respectively, The Rosary Operation and Bushkazi. The author has had experience of the effects of war as a young child, being able to recall the ominous wail of air raid sirens over his home town, Brighton, which was bombed regularly from 1940 to 1944.

It is clear that we cannot long continue with the constant mercurially-quick slide into the propensity for the mass killing of our fellow human beings, as a kind of relief from continually waging war on the finite resources of the planet. Homo vastens delendus est!
